Hangar Fire Protection Infrastructure: Foam vs ILDFA

March 12, 2026 | Industry Education

Two pump rooms. Two very different infrastructure philosophies.

LEFT: Legacy Foam
On the left, a pump room for an existing hangar (25,000 sqft) where the foam system is being abandoned and ILDFA is being installed.

This infrastructure, including concentrate tanks, oversized piping, and contaminated components, continues occupying valuable floor space long after the system is abandoned.

RIGHT: ILDFA
On the right, a pump room for a new hangar (110,000 sqft) protected by ILDFA. The required infrastructure is reduced to:

  • A domestic water connection
  • Two small booster pumps
  • A single 3” pipe run

This demonstrates how dramatically fire protection infrastructure can shrink when ILDFA is utilized.
