How ILDFA Changes Containment and Oil Water Separator Design

From a fire protection standpoint, the objective is clear: remove fuel from the hangar as quickly as possible. What happens to the effluent discharged from the hangar is an environmental and civil decision, not a fire protection issue.

The benefit of using ILDFA in a hangar is that diverter valves are no longer necessary. The downstream infrastructure shifts to EITHER a containment tank OR an oil water separator, NOT BOTH. ILDFA removes foam from the equation and limits effluent to only water and hydrocarbons.

Effluent Strategy Starts Early

Effluent management is not one-size-fits-all. Site conditions, regulations, and operational priorities all influence the approach. The updated whitepaper outlines recommended containment and treatment strategies that are currently in use across our numerous hangar installations.
This document is provided to help encourage early coordination between fire protection, environmental, and civil teams, with the goal of avoiding redesigns and project delays.

The ILDFA Containment & Effluent Management White Paper has been updated to include calculation tables aligned with the most recent guidance from UFC 4-211-01, NFPA 409, and FM Data Sheet 7-93. The document is intended to support early design decisions, but does not replace project-specific engineering.
