“Water only” VS ILDFA in Aircraft Hangars Housing Composite Aircraft

Ignited spill in “water only” hangar
Ignited spill on ILDFA

It is well known that water cannot extinguish a fuel fire. This is why NFPA 409 and FM Datasheet 7-93 require low level fire protection such as fire suppression foam systems or ILDFA in hangars in which fueled aircraft are being maintained.

It is important however to challenge assumptions and asses what will be the consequence of different fire scenarios in a fire in a hangar with just using a water only fire protection system

Modern aircraft complicate this assessment by the fact that they are made of composite materials that will auto ignite when exposed to enough heat. The F35 Lighting II skin for example is predominantly made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP)

We analyzed what would happen in a pool fire event to adjacent aircraft when you do not have building code prescribed fire protection in a hangar with multiple F35 fighter jets.
